How to become a Fashion Model
1. Fashion Careers You
May Be Interested In:
Do
you have a love for fashion? Whether you make your own clothes or
fashion accessories or if you regularly find yourself giving fashion
advice to those that you know, have you ever thought about a career
in fashion? If you haven’t, you may want to take the time to do so.
Despite the common myth that a career in fashion is one that is
difficult to obtain, it is more than possible with the right amount
of willpower and the need to succeed.
When it comes to having a career in fashion, many individuals wonder
exactly what they can do. The good thing about fashion is that there
are a number of fashion focused jobs and careers out there. Some of
these jobs involve working for someone else, like another company,
but there are also opportunities out there where you can start your
own business and be your own boss. If you would like to know more
about some of the many careers in fashion that you may be able to
have, you will want to read on.
One of the most popular and sought after careers in fashion is that
of a fashion designer. Fashion designers are individuals who design
clothing and fashion accessories, like jewellery or handbags. Many
fashion designers start out small by making clothes and fashion
accessories for themselves and their friends, but many later decide
to start selling their own fashions. What is nice about being a
fashion designer is that you can continue to make your own clothes
or you can hire a manufacturer to do it for you. You may also want
to think about selling your own clothes either locally or online.
Speaking of selling the clothes or fashion accessories that you may
have designed, that leads to another fashion career. One other
fashion career that you may be interested in is being the owner and
operator of a fashion store. Fashion stores come in all different
size, shapes, and styles. There are some fashion stores that focus
on a particular type of clothing, like elegant eveningwear, and
others who offer all different types of fashions for all different
individuals, like men, women, and children. You also have the option
of selling your own designs, if you are fashion designer, or buying
other designer’s products to sell inside your stores, whether they
are online stores, offline stores, or both.
Another fashion career that may be of interest to you is a fashion
consultant. Fashion consultants are individuals who advise or
consult with their customers on the latest in fashion trends. The
clients of fashion consultants are often ones who are unsure about
what to wear for a new job, a job interview, an elegant dinner, a
wedding, or another important event. If you have a love for fashion,
enjoy keeping up with the latest in fashion news and trends, and
enjoy giving fashion advice to those that you know, you may want to
look into a career as a fashion consultant.
Another one of the many careers in fashion that you may want to look
into is one that is relatively unique. Each year, thousands of
fashions shows take place in the United States. While a select few
of those shows are able to make it on the national news, not all are
that popular. Did you know that many local stores and fashion
designers have their own local fashions shows? They do, but many do
not realize that they can or have the time to plan a fashion show
and this is where you can come in. You can make money as a fashion
show organizer. Fashion show organizers often target local fashion
stores and fashion designers to explain the many benefits of having
a fashion show to them. As a fashion show designer, you may be in
charge of making the show run well. This often includes booking the
fashion show space, designing the stage, hiring the models, and so
forth.
As you can see, there are a number of different fashion focused
careers or jobs out there for you to choose from. What is even more
amazing is that the above mentioned fashion focused careers are just
a few of the many that exist. 2. Basic
Criteria for Choosing Your Fashion Design School:
School,
obviously, is the one main vehicle where you can acquire basic and
formal training. This is true to all fields and industries. And as
such, the fashion industry does not escape this reality.
You
may have the talent and the unique sense for fashion but without
structured training, you might fail to understand and explore more
on your gifts.
Besides, one's success in the field of fashion
relies partly on your choice of school. In this article, we will
give you the basic criteria you can use in exploring your options of
fashion design school.
Cost- This is one of the main
considerations that largely affect your choice of school. The sad
truth with fashion design schools is that they are too few and among
the relatively small number are the handful schools that can truly
deliver efficient education.
As with many other things, low
cost fashion design schools are good but only if they can give
effective learning. This is rarely the case though. Often, with
lower fees, lower quality of education may be had. This is due
primarily to the reason that such schools can't afford higher paying
professionals to provide them with man power. Thus, they settle for
people who can give service at a low price. Don’t let quality suffer
over the limit of your budget. There will always be some
well-performing fashion design schools that will suit your means.
Area of Specialization- In the fashion industry, it is well
recognized that one should have special fields where they are
greatly inclined to. This must be triggered or further supplemented
by the fashion school of your choice.
The first thing you
would want to do is to study the nature of the fashion design
school. What fields does it cater? What courses does it focus on?
What are their main emphases in delivering the art? These are among
the many things that you should give intense consideration since the
fashion design school that you will be choosing would largely
influence your career later.
The best aid for your choice of
school is to know its reputation. A self respecting fashion design
school is one that makes itself renowned in the world of fashion.
Does your school of consideration participate in fashion school
competitions? This would be a sure mark of fostering excellence in
the industry and the school's commitment for brilliant education.
To maximize your strength, you must therefore find a school that
focuses on your own field of specialization.
Considerations
on the Curriculum- As with college education, you must also check
into the curriculum offered in the school of fashion design. To get
the best offered in your spectrum of choices, you can compare
curriculum from various schools and decide what you think would best
fit in your preferences.
Ratio of teacher to students- The
size of a class against a teacher means two things- the school is
either too popular or it’s the other way around. Nevertheless, the
larger the size of the class the more likely would education suffer.
It is often better to choose between schools of relatively fewer
students since this will normally have the implication of focusing
better on the students.
These are only some of the major
points to consider in choosing your fashion design school. As for
your final decision, your best judgment must out rule any doubt.
3. How to Find the Perfect Fashion
School
Are
you interested in having a career in fashion? If you are, there is a
good chance that you may be interested in attending fashion school.
While it is more than possible to make money as a fashion designer,
a fashion seller, and a fashion consultant without having a degree,
you will find that having one may improve your chances of running a
successful business.
As nice as it is to know that a degree from a fashion school or at
least a certificate of completion may improve your chances of having
a successful business, you may be wondering exactly why that is. If
you are interested in being a professional fashion designer, you may
already know that thousands have tired to do so and failed.
Unfortunately, many of those individuals ended up making many simple
mistakes. By getting a degree and the training that comes along with
it, you are less likely to make some of these common mistakes and
you may learn many other helpful tips and tricks. The same can be
said for running a fashion store or working as a fashion consultant.
Now you that you know the importance of attending fashion school,
you may be wondering what it the best fashion school to attend. When
it comes to finding the best fashion school for you to attend, there
are a number of important factors that you will want to take into
consideration. One of those factors is the type of school you would
like to attend. Fashion schools and fashion training courses come in
a number of different formats. For instance, there are traditional
two and four year colleges and universities where you can walk away
with a degree. On the other hand, there are training schools that
provide you with a certificate of completion, which is, in a way,
like a degree.
Location is another factor that should be taken into consideration.
If you are preparing to graduate from high school, you may find it
easier to find a fashion school to attend, as you may be more
willing to relocate than someone who has roots already established
or a family. If you want to stay local, you should still have a
number of fashion schools or at least fashion training courses to
choose from. In all honesty, the larger the city that you live in or
around, the better your chances are of having more options.
Perhaps, the easiest way to go about examining all of your options,
in terms of fashion schools, is by using the internet. When using
the internet, you may want to think about performing a standard
internet search with a phrase like “fashion school.” If you would
like to stay in a particular area, you may want to incorporate that
city or town into your internet search, as it will provide you with
more tailored results. You should thoroughly examine the websites of
all fashion schools that you come across to see what type of
training is offered and how much that training costs.
You may also want to ask those that you know for recommendations or
any information that they may have on fashion schools. Although the
person that you are speaking to may not necessarily have attended a
fashion school, they may know of someone who has had. Colleges and
training schools are often something that is regularly discussed
among friends and acquaintances; therefore, you never know what
information you can get through word of mouth. In addition, if you
are still a high school student, you may want to think about
speaking with your guidance counsellor for assistance.
As a reminder, attending fashion school is something that is
optional, especially if you are interested in starting your own
business. Despite being optional, you may still want to take the
time to examine fashion schools. You may actually be surprised with
how much you can learn by attending one.
4. Advantages of Attending Fashion Schools
Fashion
is where money is. The public has grown so obsessed with Hollywood
that encourages the fashion industry to evolve on its lucrative
growth. Instant popularity is at hand if you have the right
combination of everything (say right choice of endorser, right
choice of fashion ideas, innovative and creative sense of fashion
and the likes).
Nonetheless, the fashion industry is a hard
business to penetrate. You must be equipped with the knowledge and
influences that would provide you the maximum exposure you need to
deliver your creations into the industry. But still, most of
everything is commanded by your brilliance in designing that would
give you centre stage.
Your talent might be there. It is an
innate property that can't be stolen from you. It is in your own
discretion though to let that talent turn into passion. But talent
and skills are not enough. You have to undergo formal instructions
to be able to hone those special features and direct them
specifically towards becoming the best of your self.
This is
the basic principle why fashion schools exist and continue to serve
budding artists. They provide guidance and supplemental training to
drive the artist to achieve with his creations. While online fashion
schools have been gathering fame in the fashion industry, this still
does not negate the fact that hands-on training and face-to-face
instructions can't be equalled even by the best online degree
offers.
Since you are considering entering a fashion school,
it is expected of you to be knowledgeable enough on the fundamentals
of fashion designing and basic awareness on designing. However, this
is not an implication that the student must produce ramp-quality
creations initially. Instead, you are expected to bring out the
brilliance in simple designs and create concepts that you may have
patterned on the works of some great fashion designers or better
yet, designs of your own concepts.
Remember that fashion
designers only make name in the industry when they have produced
something genuinely creative that can cater the present fashion
sense while having the originality and good sense of distinction
from other fashion trends.
You may not be possessing this
nature for the moment. But the thing is, an efficient fashion school
could best bring out the brilliance in you and in your creations.
Initially, you may be producing rubbish concepts but this would be
set off with good learning you have acquired from a formal school.
Some people may contend that even without proper education, an
artist can create fashion trends that will be embraced by the
public. Yes, that might be true. But remember that there are too few
individuals who have made it into the fashion scene with the
littlest formal study. Besides, even the trends in fashion change.
What may have been true before cant be exactly true now. A formal
schooling would update you of the most recent trends and the
analysis of past styles that have recreated the industry.
A
fashion school, like tertiary education will help you seek out your
niche. You might have creative ideas lurking in your mind but these
free-flowing ideas would be turned into nothing if not properly
directed.
Moreover, the experiences of instructors in the
fashion schools would be passed down on you. Thus, you are less
likely to fall into the same pitfalls they have arisen from
themselves.
5. A Career In Fashion Modeling
By Tony
Jacowski
While
surfing through TV channels, you probably have come across a model in an ad or a
fashion channel with a svelte and appealing figure, and a great deal of poise.
And, for the umpteenth time you may have wished that you could be one. It's not
just the attention that makes an individual want to be a model, but also the
money involved.
Modeling is not confined to traveling to exotic locations, being pampered,
attending celebrity parties and earning thousand dollars a day. Although most
people like to be in the limelight, rub shoulders with the fashion circuit's
who's who, and indulge in the best cuisines of the world, modeling is much more
than that.
Requirements
If you plan to take up modeling as a career, you need to acquire demanding
physical attributes. You need to first rate yourself. Gauge your weaknesses and
your strengths. Not everyone is perfect, but you can work on your flaws and
improve on your plus points. For example, your height should be at least 5'8" or
more than that, and your body weight should be in proportion to it.
Fashion models are notorious for their unusual diets and exercise regimes
that they need to undergo to maintain the exacting body proportions required by
the profession. The skin should be healthy and without any, or very little,
blemishes. Your hair should be in good shape without any kind damage or
dehydration in evidence. Even your teeth should be straight and white, and not
crooked or flawed in any manner. A million dollar smile would do half your job.
Models lead a fun filled and exciting life. They have lavish lifestyles, and
hop from one lovely locale to another. However, aside from all the fun, modeling
demands dedication, commitment and genuine interest. The work timings can be
erratic, and models are required to balance their work schedules, as well as
their personal health. Models especially require ample sleep, good and
nutritious food, and exercise to keep fit. Their profession demands that they
maintain their health and complexion, and adhere to a good regime of personal
grooming.
Modeling
Once you enter the modeling arena, the next step is to get noticed by a
modeling agency. Don't forget that the agency needs you just as much as you need
them. They are always on the look out for fresh faces, and if you are at the
right place at the right time, you can land yourself a lucrative modeling
assignment. Don't expect assignments to just walk up to you. You need to make an
effort to search for them, and give people a push. You will have to send out
your portfolios to modeling agencies that recruit models.
It is important to make your portfolio simple yet effective, however you
don't have to spend a lot of money to create an expensive portfolio. Usually,
agencies have open castings where newcomers have a chance of being selected.
Experience in the related field, whether in print, ramp or television ads, is an
added advantage.
Movie and film extras agencies also hire models for their movies. You can
also work as a live model at a local departmental store, or even make a public
appearance at a local event. This adds up to your experience and helps you to
familiarize yourself with the requirements of the profession.
Entering The Fashion Circle
After being hired by one of the agencies, you may have to shift base to
another city, or always be on the move. This would also mean living away from
your family or traveling a lot. Since initially it may take a while to get a
major break in the profession, you need to be patient and determined, until you
succeed. Attend all casting calls and shoots. Although established models are
known to keep people waiting, but you being a rookie cannot afford such antics.
With dedication and perseverance, you are sure to succeed.

7. The Celebrity
Fashion Phenomenon: What is So Alluring About It?
Do
you have a favourite movie star or television star? If you do, have
you ever wondered what their personal life was like? If you have,
you are definitely not alone. In today’s society, it seems as if
many individuals are interested in knowing the latest news or gossip
surrounding today’s most popular stars. In addition to who is dating
who, a focus is also placed on celebrity fashions. In fact, where
are many out there who wish that they could dress and look like one
of their favourite celebrities. While this feeling is quite common,
it often leaves many others wondering why.
When it comes to examining the celebrity fashion phenomenon it is
actually difficult to come up with an answer as to why it is so
popular. Different individuals like to look and dress like
celebrities for different reasons, some of which are easier to
explain than others. Just a few of the many reasons why the
celebrity fashion phenomenon has gained such a following are touched
on below.
The thing about celebrities is that they are popular and well-known.
In fact, many celebrities cannot even leave their homes with out
being recognized and prodded for autographs by fans. While many
celebrities wish that they could change this, there are many
“everyday,” individuals who wish that they had their own fan
following or wish that they were as popular. Although dressing a
certain way or in a certain style of clothing isn’t necessarily
guaranteed to make you more popular, there are many individuals out
there who think that it does. These are often the individuals who
regularly checkout the latest in celebrity fashion trends.
Another one of the many reasons why the celebrity fashion phenomenon
is continuing to increase in numbers is because celebrities are
often well-known for their fashion choices. If you were to turn your
television on to a fashion show or even just a news channel, read a
fashion magazine, or visit an online celebrity gossip website, there
is a good chance that you will find a celebrity being complimented
in their good taste in clothing. Most “everyday,” individuals aren’t
always complimented on their clothing or fashion accessories,
although many wish that they were. That is one of the many reasons
why many individuals try to keep up with celebrity fashions and copy
them, in any way possible.
Although there are some out there who view the celebrity fashion
phenomenon as an unhealthy obsession, there is actually really
nothing wrong with keeping up with the latest in celebrity fashions.
What you need to remember though is that just because it looks good
on a celebrity, it doesn’t necessarily mean that the same thing will
look good on you. You should also keep price in mind. Many
celebrities have unlimited financial resources; therefore, the cost
of clothing and fashion accessories isn’t always an issue for them,
but it may for you. Of course, you can dress like a celebrity if you
want to, but you need to remember that celebrity fashions regularly
change; therefore, there is no need for you to go broke trying to
afford the “hottest,” trends that may only last for a few weeks.
In short, the celebrity fashion phenomenon is one that is regularly
discussed by fashion experts, product manufacturers and clothing
designers. With the celebrity fashion phenomenon at its current
state, it is not uncommon to find designers trying their best to get
their latest fashions appearing on today’s hottest celebrities.
8. Dealing with Your
Teenager and the Latest Fashion Trends:
Are
you the parent of a teenager? If you are, you likely already know
that many teens want to look their best, at least fashion wise. For
that reason, many teens keep up on the latest fashion tends and use
them. While this is okay in some aspects, it can result in your
teenager wearing baggy pants showing their boxers or revealing
shirts that show off too much cleavage. While these do seem to be
popular fashion trends, do you really want your child displaying
them? If not, you may be wondering what you should do.
When it comes to your teenager and fashion trends that you may not
necessarily approve of, your first thought may be to lay down the
law. As a parent, this is your right to do, but did you know that
you may actually end up causing more damage? Do you remember what it
was like being a teenager? If you were like most teenagers, there
was a good chance that the last thing you wanted was to be told how
to dress by your parents and the same is likely so for your own
teen. That is why you may want to think about taking a different
approach.
One of the many instances where you should speak to your child about
their fashions is if it may end up causing them some harm. As
previously mentioned, many of the latest fashion trends for women
and for girls are low cut shirts and low rise pants. This often ends
up leaving a good portion of the body exposed. In today’s society,
you always need to be on the lookout for sexual predators. While
your teenager may not necessarily be interested in someone, someone
may actually end up getting that type feeling from them. This could
put your teenager in a weird and possibly dangerous situation. If
that is the case, you may want to take the time to explain that, as
it may sink in better than if you were just to say “change your
clothes; you can’t wear that.”
It is also important that both you and your teenager remember that
fashion trends regularly change. It is not uncommon for a fashion
trend to only last a few months. If you are not happy with the
current fashion trends, but your teenagers are, you may want to
encourage them to explore other options. There are a number of
fashion magazines and online fashion websites that have a large
number of fashion trends and information on those trends. Not all
fashion trends require the wearing of “skimpy,” clothing. For that
reason, you may want to explore other options. If your teenager is a
girl, it could actually turn into a neat mother daughter bonding
experience between the two of you.
Something else that you may not necessarily think about, but should,
is if your child goes to high school. Many high schools have dress
codes and these dress codes often prohibit the wearing of revealing
clothing. While not all schools actively enforce their dress codes,
many out there do. Like with being told not wear certain clothes by
their parents, many teenagers may feel angered being told by school
officials. For that reason, you may want to take action before
anything serious happens that could seriously jeopardize your child
and their school records. It is not uncommon to hear of instances
where children are suspended from school due to not following the
school’s dress code.
In short, teenagers and fashion are something that just seems to
click together. While it is important for your teenager to fit in
with others and be popular at school, they do not necessarily have
to be wearing the “hottest,” clothes or fashion accessories to do
so. They may not necessarily understand it at the time, but as a
parent it is your job to help them and keep them safe.
from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit
A lot of people want to be a model because it's glamorous and sexy. However, it's an extremely competitive and gruelling business that will more likely break you than make you. Here are some cold, hard truths about becoming a model, as well as some realistic advice to make it happen.
Steps
-
Realize that there are qualities every model needs to have, depending on the type of model one wishes to become. Generally, any feature indicative of good health is a must--clear skin, a full head of hair, and overall symmetry. Other qualities such as height and weight depend on what you're modeling. Consider working with a fitness trainer, especially someone who has a good reputation and experience with models. Tell them your modeling goals and how you'll need your body to look.
-
Decide what kind of model you'd like to be. Technically, anybody can be a model. However, do remember that if you don't meet certain requirements, the work available to you will be incredibly limited, and you may have to compensate in other departments (reliability, technique, etc).
-
If your body is full and curvaceous, you may be able to be a plus size model.
-
If you're tall (at the very least 5'7 for editorial & 5'8 for catwalk.) and very skinny but with a small breast size, you can be a catwalk model.
-
If you have large breasts but not very wide hips, you can be an underwear model.
-
If you don't fit any of the face or body descriptions, perhaps you can be a foot, hair or hand model. -
Consider your "look". There is more of a curvy California look, a svelte New York look, a waif-like European look, girl next door, swim suit or lingerie (usually requires the bust to fill out the suits and a very thin waist)...Know what you're equipped with, but also work to pull off other looks.
-
Get some photos done. These don't have to be professional but they should be created for the purpose of showing your ability as a model. Although agencies say they are happy with snapshots, that doesn't mean they want to see an out of focus shot of you out partying with your friends with a little note attached saying that you're the one on the right! As a bare minimum, you will need one headshot and one body shot.
-
Get your favorites and take the photos to be printed into 8x10s. Save these in case you are asked to leave a photograph anywhere before you have professional ones done. Don't force these on people or try to hand them out. You'll be better off waiting for the professional shots instead of taking risks with an amateur photo.
-
Consider getting the photos professionally done. Professional photography, even if it is expensive, will give you a better idea of what kind of look you project. You will eventually need these photographs to snag an interview, so think of it as a worthwhile investment!
-
Look up the number of a reputable modeling agency. You can find these in your area phone book or by running a search on the Internet. Make an appointment.
-
Be prepared. When you attend your appointment, they might ask you to pull certain faces like laughing, happy, sad, or seductive. Practice in front of a mirror beforehand. It may help to look at pictures of models in magazines to get an idea. Be ready to have a Polaroid close up of your face taken. You really only get one chance for this photo. They'll use this to compare to your headshot. They will ask you to walk and take your measurements, so be prepared for all of that as well. Learn to accept rejection or criticism politely (see Warnings below). Thank the people for their time.
-
Be professional. Be polite and always turn up on time to any appointment or shoot. If you're late or rude, word soon gets around and then nobody will want to work with you.
-
Be organized! Models often get called off places at the last minute and have very busy days. You need to be on top of things if you want to succeed. Buying a day-to-day planner can really help.
-
Confirm whether or not there will be a make-up artist on site for any work you are doing. 99 times out of 100 there will be one, but there may be the odd occasion where you are required to do your own make-up. If there is a make-up artist, then arrive fresh faced.
-
Be truthful about your measurements. Don't say you're skinnier than you are just to get a shoot. Once there, the stylist will have problems and you will get found out. Word will get around and you could find yourself without a career!
-
Treat modeling like a real job. Girls that don't take it seriously have small chances of succeeding in their modeling career. Realize that it is harder than it appears and there's a lot of work behind all that glitz&glamour at fashion shows.
Tips
-
You may have higher chances to become a model if you have a pretty face. However, this is not a requirement; most models actually look pretty common in matters of facial traits. But you still have to keep in mind that being photogenic, however, is a requirement.
-
Sign up for acting classes or take acting workshops when the opportunity is available. Pantomime classes are a great tool for models. Any skills you can add to your arsenal will only help your future career.
-
You can also enter modeling contests. However, make sure you check that these are being run by a reputable agency.
-
If, for whatever reason, you've decided signing with an agency isn't right for you, you could consider going freelance. But be warned: the pay is usually considerably less and there are fewer safety precautions.
-
Get your parents' permission if you're under the age defined by your country as being an adult.
-
Some modeling schools are licensed by the Board of Education. However, whether or not they will teach you how to become a model is questionable, and some agencies even say that attending a modeling school can teach you bad habits that are hard to unlearn! They are also expensive.
-
Get a website. It helps spread the word that you're out there and also serves as a place for your adoring fans.
-
Know your limits on style and nudity. If you don't want to do glamor work or are uncomfortable doing full nudity, speak up and don't let people push you past those limits. Also, consider where you want your career to go in the future. Sure, you may be comfortable doing glamor now, but what if you decide you want to do fashion or catalog work in the future? You might be discriminated against if they know you have done this line of work.
-
Have a portfolio it helps when bringing to clients. Go to a Go-SE, and go- see the clients
Warnings
-
Modeling is a tough business. Try not to be discouraged by rejections. Even top models still get rejected for about 70% of everything they are put forward for!
-
If you become one of the top models like Kate Moss, the people you work for might ask you to take drastic measures to stay a top model. For example, they might ask you to get nose jobs, liposuction, or have breast implants. And lose more weight... The pressure of modeling can cause a lot of long term mental health problems, including eating disorders. Don't be afraid to speak to somebody if you think it is getting all too much. If you just can't handle the pressure, it may be time to start thinking of a new profession. A job isn't worth your health!
-
Be wary of any agency that asks for money up front. The majority of agencies get their money through commission- meaning they take a certain percentage of your pay for every job that you do. If you don't work, then they don't get paid. If you've already paid up, there's no incentive for them to find you work. However, don't dismiss everybody who asks you for up-front fees as a scam. If you are sure that they are an agency, listen carefully to what they are asking for the fees for. Bigger agencies in bigger markets will often pay for these for you or at least loan you the money but smaller agencies or agencies in smaller markets can't afford to do this. If the fees are to cover actual representation, this probably isn't a good deal. Although there are some good agencies out there who work on this basis, the majority are nothing more than con artists. Find models who they represent, get in touch with them and ask them what they think of the representation they are getting.
-
If you are invited to a foreign country (i.e. Hong Kong, Macau etc.) for an audition or job, have enough funds to purchase a return ticket yourself. While legitimate jobs exist, there are many scams that provide one way tickets then trap young girls into prostitution rings when they cannot afford to go back home.
-
If you are planning a photo shoot with a photographer you have met online, it is highly recommended that you bring a chaperone to the shoot. It's for your own safety, as you never know who is who online! If you can't bring a chaperone (because you are unable to find one or because the photographer doesn't allow chaperones), make sure you do a background search on the photographer first- check out things such as who they have worked with and for - and call somebody when you get to the shoot and when you leave the shoot.
-
Almost all agencies will ask you to fill out a contract. Be sure to read through it thoroughly and make sure you know what every word means, even use a dictionary if you have to! Better know what you are signing for before you accept.

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit
Want people to talk about what you wear or how good you look even when you don't look that great? It's simple. Throw together a few good outfits that make people envy you, then whatever you wear after (sweatpants, birkenstocks, stained shirts) people will say they like and might get the same piece of clothing.
Steps
-
Knowing how to dress is key. Buy magazines like Elle, Vogue, and Harper's Bazaar. Look at the pictures. Read the articles. Choose a few key looks that will suit your lifestyle and body type, and implement them into your current wardrobe. Make sure to put your own spin on a look. You can't be an icon if you're just copying Elle.
-
Write down a list of words you want to describe your look or vibe. Then, compare that list with the items from fashion magazines that you like, and that will suit you well.
-
Mix 'n' Match. Try mixing fashions like goth and geek, emo and jock, prep and punk.
-
Look in your closet, and throw away (or give away) anything you never used and will never use.
-
Buy accessories that mix well with what you have.
-
Get a few new shoes and sandals at a reasonably-priced store, like Payless (it's fashionable, and no one has to know). Steer clear of stores that turn out low-quality items. You want to be fashionable, not cheap. Fashion is about quality clothing that fit well, not cheap, flashy items.
-
Wear make-up! Think you don't need it? Well, you probably do. Go to a makeup counter at a department store for a makeover. Some charge, but others don't. Listen closely to the tips they offer for your coloring and facial structure. If you can't afford to buy quality cosmetics, you will be able to find similar items at a drugstore or discount superstore. Items to splurge on: moisturizer, foundation, and mascara. Then, pick up cheaper eyeshadow, lip gloss/lipstick, blush, etc. on your next drugstore run.
-
Do your hair. Make sure to invest in quality haircare products. While paying $20 for shampoo may seem outlandish, if you have difficult hair it will make all the difference. Quality shampoo and conditioner can help compensate for hard water or previous poor treatment of hair. (If you haven't cut your hair in the past two months, it's time to visit the salon!) Depending on your facial structure, you will require a different hairstyle. A few things to keep in mind: poor color can ruin the greatest cut, and make sure to wash you hair- at a minimum- every other day.
-
Make sure to compliment other stylish people, they will start noticing what you wear, and you will be more noticed. It doesn't do to hang out with fashion misfits, you will be branded as one. The crowd you roll with is very important for your fashion status quo.
Tips
-
Don't overdo the accessories. You'll see fashion models wear about 30 necklaces, but that's not always good. One to three necklaces, a bracelet and earrings are good. Try to make them match the style of the outfit.
-
Always balance your clothing. If you're wearing a bright and colourful top, wear a neutral bottom. same goes for makeup. Shocking red lips? Counter with soft eye colours.
-
Avoid buying clothes/accessories/shoes that are "in" right now. Chances are, they'll go out of style before you get to wear them. Buy more classic pieces that never go out of style, like jeans & invest in a few higher-end items.
-
Define what a fashion icon really is. A fashion icon is a person that people admire and adore for outfits and looks. In other words, a fashion icon is a trendsetter. You are supposed to be a role model, so stay away from drugs and cigarettes. Drugs and cigarettes will destroy you as a fashion icon.
-
Confidence will boost your determination, and to be a fashion icon, you need determination.
-
Keep a journal of all the clothes and accessories you wear daily.
-
Be a total risk-taker! You don't ALWAYS have to dress preppy and match everything!
-
Keep in mind to dress appropriate and you'll rock out!
Warnings
-
You can't have too much color. Wear neutrals, dark and bright in matches.
-
Wearing anything that's too-tight never looks good. Don't be afraid to buy a larger size.
-
Don't be too cocky, confident, or obnoxious. To be a fashion icon, you have to set good examples.
-
Reading fashion magazines might help you to become a fashion icon. But use your own sense of style to pick out a Fashion Icon style.
Things You'll Need
-
Confidence (But not over-done!)
-
A great outfit that you feel comfortable in that may fit your personality
-
A good hairstyle and makeup to go with your trendy clothing!

11. Fashion Model
and fashion modeling according to Gistweb:
Teen fashion modeling is a
hit-or-miss industry, and it's important that teen models have the
support of their parents or guardians. Find out why teen models
should think of modeling as a hobby with help from a working model
in this free video on modeling tips.
1
A model, sometimes called a
mannequin, is a person who is employed for the purpose of displaying
and promoting fashion clothing or other products and for advertising
or promotional purposes or who poses for works of art.
2
How to become a fashion model?
Deciding to become a fashion model is the same as deciding to be a
writer or a singer.
3
Today's world of modeling
becomes so popular. Young girls have a craze to become a model. So I
am giving details about teenage model requirements and what other
things to do to be a teen model.
4
Very soon you too will become a
celebrity. Fashion modeling is tough to get into, with high
competition because top models are earning thousands of dollars a
day.
5
I am working at a professional
level in the fashion modeling industry and I had 11 years of
experience in it. I had worked as professional as well as an agent
of top modeling agency. I am giving you some basic guides about
fashion model.
6
A fashion model is someone who
a designer uses to sell or showcase products, such as clothing or
perfume. Find out how fashion models are used to show different
sides of a piece of clothing with help from a working model in this
free video on modeling tips.
7
Designers, photographers and
magazine editors will all choose their models from a fashion model
agency and there are agencies set up specifically to cater to the
fashion industry. Most models are self employed and obtain work
through their agents. As a fashion model, you will need to spend and
invest wisely.
8
Models may be used to display
and promote clothing. Fashion modeling may involve catwalk or runway
modeling or editorial modeling, covering photography for magazine
spreads, ad campaigns, catalogues, print etc. The emphasis of
fashion photography is on the clothes or accessories, not the model.
9
The first person described as a
fashion model is believed to be Parisian shopgirl, Marie Vernet
Worth. She was a house model in 1853, to her fashion designer
husband, Charles Frederick Worth.
10
In an ideal world we would all
be at least six feet tall with slender bodies and immaculate looks.
The fashion model is the depiction of the fashion designers
preference (tall slim girls and six feet tall, muscular or slim
toned men) and therefore will posses physical attributes that are
out of the norm.
11
Can a sports model make any
money? The fees paid for the services of a sports model can be just
as lucrative as in the fashion world, and they should be. What
sports models do is physically and mentally demanding.
12
The ideal measurements used to
be 35-24-35 in (90-60-90 cm) which were the alleged measurements of
Marilyn Monroe. However, today's fashion models tend to have
measurements closer to the AMA recommended shape, although by no
means all models have these exact statistics, and fashion houses may
require other sizes for their models.
13
New York is the centre of the
fashion industry in America. The top model agencies and the top
models are there. But other cities need models too.
14
Organizers of a fashion show in
Madrid in September 2006 turned away models who were judged to be
underweight by medical personnel who were on hand.

Runway Models works in Fashion
Shows, where clothes designers present their upcoming designs or
Fashion Shows, run by a store, mall, club etc. All runway models
must meet special requirements and have measurements that fit an
actual standard clothing size. Almost all modeling agencies work
with Runway Models.
2
High fashion modeling is an
expertise form for fashion. The photographer pictures the models in
creative themes that relate to promoting dresses and dress
accessories. Here the model uses their face and physical attribute
to show different emotions needed.
3
Fashion models are used mainly
to promote products (primarily clothing and accessories but almost
anything else as well). There are two types of fashion models: high
fashion and commercial. High fashion modeling is an art form of
fashion.
4
Models work on a long, raised
platform about four feet wide.
5
That's right, young or old,
black, white, or any shade in between. Models act as props to help
promote for the display of items like dresses, jewellery,
accessories and the like.
6
Most models that walk the
runway are of a particular breed and a huge part of the clothing
industry. Leading designers rely on fashion models to walk the
runway at fashion events to display their collections, and help
brand their designs.
7
When it does exist, "petite"
fashion models aren't what most people might expect. In the fashion
world, "petite" means "under 5'9" tall", and most of them are 5'7"
to 5'8" tall. Sometimes shorter models get jobs as fit models, or in
mall fashion shows, but there is very little opportunity in fashion
modeling for "petites".
8
A modeling career doesn’t
necessarily guarantee that you will achieve a supermodel (a model
who is known by everyone worldwide) status, and if you don’t become
an instant millionaire, that doesn’t mean that you aren’t a
successful model either. There are many different types of models
and the pay scale varies for these jobs.
9
They model haute couture
(extravagant, hand-made garments), walk the runway and appear in
magazines like Vogue and Elle. Commercial modeling includes
catalogue, print, calendars, billboards and newspaper ads.
10
I think the key to finding if
you have a chance of becoming a model and to avoid getting ripped
off is to understand the markets that actually use models. Modeling
is not an end in itself.
11
The height and weight
requirements in commercial modeling are not as drastic as in
fashion, and they very from job to job. A catalogue, for example,
would require a taller model for clothes to look good, but an
anti-balding shampoo ad would feature a middle-aged gentleman, who'd
be the perfect model for that particular product.
12
Teen model are on high demand
as teens are attractive, young, exude youthful charm, and have
virgin sex appeal. A hot teen model with a unique beauty is a main
attraction in the field of modeling and economically worthwhile. Ten
modeling is demanding, high energy, and very popular category.
